Recommendation: Walleye

The Appetizer

Rustic, warm, welcoming, unpretentious, and stellar, are just a few ways I would describe the Choro Gold Medal winning #1 restuarant. No need to worry about anything but flavor here at Bennethum’s. With a healthy mix of flavors from ribs to schnitzel I promise you wont have to look hard for a dish you’ll love.

The Main Course

When I visited: September, 2020 on the way home after a beautiful camping trip in the U.P.

What I ordered: Parmesan encrusted walleye with fingerling potatoes and market vegetables

Why I recommend: Perfection. Every aspect of this meal was perfect. This cut was the best fish I’d ever had. The crust was an exceptional compliment to the filet, with perfect balance of the saltiness of the parmesan with the mild sweetness of the walleye. 10/10 no notes.

The potatoes too were fantastic, I had never before experienced a potato compel me to ask the server its type. Yet I did, and have now searched high an low for my own fingerling potatoes. These particular potatoes were so creamy, nutty, and buttery. They certainly left a a lasting impression.

The presentation, as with the restaurant itself, was not too fancy. They let the golden brown crust and multi colored potatoes and greens be the stars of the show. It doesn’t need all that, it simply needs you to take a bite and everything else will fall into place.

Portion sizing, unsurprisingly was perfect. The filet was of the right size and my serving off vegetables and potatoes were spot on. I left with an empty plate and full stomach but was never uncomfortable. Pricing was reasonable, with such a wonderful meal costing under $45 I don’t see much room to complain.

Desert

I absolutely love this restaurant. I have been singing its praises for years and drive around with a menu in my car despite living over 200 miles away. The fish is fresh, the staff is nice, and everything is made with love. what’s not to like?
